West Portal Playground
Located in San Francisco's West Portal neighborhood - West Portal Park and Playground (now referred to as the Dragon Playground) was completely redesigned and reopened in 2020. This park has been ranked as a "perfect park' by the SF Standard and SF Rec and Park Scorecards.
The new park has a completely redesigned playground with unique play structures that are engaging, imaginative and memorable. Special attention was paid to accessibility by creating play spaces for all abilities through the layout, selection of materials and specialize equipment - such as roller tables, accessible spinners and swings, layout and surfacing. Attention was placed on details such as color scheme to ensure this fog filled area would remain bright and engaging. For those who would prefer a quieter area with more tactile and free play, a nature play area was designed. This area took a previously unused area of the park and turned it into a fun filled space with natural plantings, logs and a gravel pit.
To ensure a better sense of safety and accessibility a new entry was developed with better lighting. This park also houses a community and senior center which is used in the evenings. Lighting and new pathways were important to the community for these purposes.
The playground also includes two beautiful mosaics designed by mosaic artist Rachael Rodi. In total they are over 58 feet long and have over 100 donor tiles.
This project included community engagement, surveys, community design, grant writing, and working with local officials and shareholders. The dragon slide head & feet are custom pieces we designed with the help of a 3d artist and playground fabricator. It has sparked such delight in all that interact with the park!
As a result of our work, the project recently received a 2014 Community Opportunity Fund grant of $500,000 from San Francisco Rec and Park and raised over 1.8 million dollars towards the project.
